Scary Wrestler is No Brute

TAKING people uneasy is just part of life for Kane, the 145kg, 2m-tall World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler who chokeslams people on TV for a living.

"I'll come up behind someone and they'll turn around and say something that they normally wouldn't, something that's a little... offensive, but that's just a reaction," he told The New Paper in a phone interview from New York.

So it's little surprise that Kane (real name Glenn Jacobs) makes his movie debut in a horror/slasher movie - the upcoming See No Evil.

He plays a character similar to his in-ring persona: an unstoppable, monstrous psychopath.

As Jacob Goodnight, a mass murderer with an eyeball fetish, he slaughters a group of juvenile delinquents assigned to community service in a derelict hotel.

So imposing is he that even his fellow actors on the WWE Films production have said they were frightened by him. He welcomed this as he believed it would make their on-screen performances more real.

The 39-year-old wrestler cultivated this fear by staying aloof from the rest of the cast.

You wouldn't believe it looking at him but on the phone, Kane is polite, eloquent, even sounding - dare we say it - intellectual.

The perception is quickly reinforced when he reveals that one of his hobbies is reading, especially on history, government, politics and current affairs.

"I think the most common misconception about the WWE is that we're a bunch of ignorant brutes," he said.

He's a videogame geek too, and enjoys games like Grand Theft Auto.

He seemed grounded. Ask him how life has changed now that he's a movie star, and he chuckles.

"I haven't let it change. I'm in control of my life," he said.

He was proud of his role, and critical of some of the poor reviews See No Evil has received.

Kane said many reviewers didn't understand the acting.

Especially those who said his lack of lines was a detriment to his performance.

"90 per cent of the way people communicate is through body movements and emotions," he said.

He would know. As the gruesome half-brother of the legendary wrestler, The Undertaker, he spent most of his WWE career in a mask, uttering not a word.

And is he planning to retire soon?

"It's always neat when people tell me the Internet is saying something, when I haven't even thought about it yet. So no, there's no truth to that."
